Winter Fire Safety Tips For Your Home

October 5 -11 2008 is Fire Prevention Week. Check your smoke alarms make sure they are working and time to replace the batteries. Make sure also that a fire extinguisher is available for use in your homes and that they are in good working order and you know how to use them. Have your family conduct fire drill, so they know what to do during fires.

Fire safety tips for the winter months is provided by U.S. Fire Administration.

The high cost of home heating fuels and utilities have caused many Americans to search for alternate sources of home heating. The use of wood burning stoves is growing and space heaters are selling rapidly, or coming out of storage. Fireplaces are burning wood and man made logs. All these methods of heating may be acceptable. They are, however, a major contributing factor in residential fires. Many of these fires can be prevented. The following fire safety tips can help you maintain a fire safe home this winter.

Kerosene Heaters

*Be sure that kerosene heaters are legal in your area.

*Be sure your heater is in good working condition. Inspect exhaust parts for carbon buildup. Be sure the heater has an emergency shut off in case the heater is tipped over.

*Never use fuel burning appliances without proper room venting. Burning fuel (coal, kerosene, or propane, for example) can produce deadly fumes.

*Use ONLY the fuel recommended by the heater manufacturer. NEVER introduce a fuel into a unit not designed for that type fuel.

*Keep kerosene, or other flammable liquids stored in approved metal containers, in well ventilated storage areas, outside of the house.

*Never fill the heater while it is operating or hot. When refueling an oil or kerosene unit, avoid overfilling.

*Refueling should be done outside of the home (or outdoors). Keep young children away from space heaters—especially when they are wearing night gowns or other loose clothing that can be easily ignited.

*When using a fuel burning appliance in the bedroom, be sure there is proper ventilation to prevent a buildup of carbon monoxide.

Furnace Heating

*It is important that you have your furnace inspected to ensure that it is in good working condition.

*Be sure all furnace controls and emergency shutoffs are in proper working condition.

*Leave furnace repairs to qualified specialists. Do not attempt repairs yourself unless you are qualified. Inspect the walls and ceiling near the furnace and along the chimney line. If the wall is hot or discolored, additional pipe insulation or clearance may be required.

*Check the flue pipe and pipe seams. Are they well supported and free of holes and cracks? Soot along or around seams may be an indicator of a leak.

*Is the chimney solid, with cracks or loose bricks? All unused flue openings should be sealed with solid masonry.

*Keep trash and other combustibles away from the heating system.

Wood Stoves And Fireplaces

Wood stoves and fireplaces are becoming a very common heat source in homes. Careful attention to safety can minimize their fire hazard.

To use them safely:

*Be sure the fireplace or stove is installed properly. Wood stoves should have adequate clearance (36”) from combustible surfaces and proper floor support and protection.

*Wood stoves should be of good quality, solid construction and design, and should be laboratory tested.

*Have the chimney inspected annually and cleaned if necessary, especially if it has not been used for some time.

*Do not use flammable liquids to start or accelerate any fire.

*Keep a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace opening, to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out, unwanted material from going in, and help prevent the possibility of burns to occupants.

*The stove should be burned hot twice a day for 15-30 minutes to reduce the amount of
creosote buildup.

*Don’t use excessive amounts of paper to build roaring fires in fireplaces. It is possible to ignite creosote in the chimney by overbuilding the fire.

*Never burn charcoal indoors. Burning charcoal can give off lethal amounts of carbon monoxide.

*Keep flammable materials away from your fireplace mantel. A spark from the fireplace could easily ignite theses materials.

*Before you go to sleep, be sure your fireplace fire is out. NEVER close your damper with hot ashes in the fireplace. A closed damper will help the fire to heat up again and will force toxic carbon monoxide into the house.

*If synthetic logs are used, follow the directions on the package. NEVER break a synthetic log apart to quicken the fire or use more than one log at a time. They often burn unevenly, releasing higher levels of carbon monoxide.

Other Fire Safety Tips

Never discard hot ashes inside or near the home. Place them in a metal container outside and well away from the house.

*Never use a range or an oven as a supplemental heating device. Not only is it a safety hazard, it can be a source of potentially toxic fumes.

*If you use an electric heater, be sure not to overload the circuit. Only use extension cords which have the necessary rating to carry an amp load.

TIP: Choose an extension cord the same size or larger than the appliance electrical cord.

*Avoid using electrical space heaters in bathrooms or other areas where they may come in contact with water.

*Frozen water pipes? Never try to thaw them with a blow torch or other open flame,
otherwise the pipe could conduct the heat and ignite the wall structure inside the wall space. Use hot water or a laboratory tested device such as a hand held dryer for thawing.

*If windows are used as emergency exits in your home, practice using them in the event fire should strike. Be sure that all the windows open easily. Home escape ladders are recommended.

*If there is a fire hydrant near your home you can assist the fire department by keeping the hydrant clear of snow so in the event it is needed, it can
be located.

FINALLY ...

*Be sure every level of your home has a working smoke alarm, and be sure to check and clean it on a monthly basis.

*Plan and practice a home escape plan with your family.

*Contact your local fire department for advice if you have a question on home fire safety.

GE® Tankless Gas Water Heater

GE launched it's new line of tankless water heater early June of this year. It's an energy efficient alternative to the conventional water heaters that everyone are very familiar. Below is GE's press release of the water heaters.

The new line of GE® tankless gas water heaters provides a continuous supply of hot water* when and where you need it. No more dipping the finger into the spray to see if the temperature is just right, or standing in a cold bathroom waiting for hot water that's been drained from the tank.

Unlike conventional water tanks that heat and store hot water around the clock, GE's tankless gas water heater only activates when you start to use hot water, and immediately de-activates when you are done. The result is a more energy-efficient system; using a tankless gas heater can save homeowners up to 35% annually on water heating costs on their energy bill over a standard 75-gallon gas tank water heater.** Those savings are a result of eliminating standby losses–the energy lost from warmed water sitting in a tank. GE's tankless gas heaters have an Ef rating of. 82, whereas a standard gas water heater has an Ef rating of just .53–.62.

The tankless system delivers continuous hot water at the precisely heated temperature to every faucet, fixture or appliance in the home.* The electronic digital control allows the homeowner to adjust the hot water temperature at the touch of a button, while the Precise Temp feature keeps water temperature within three degrees (+/-)of the heater's set point.

Another advantage of the tankless gas water heater is that with proper sizing, it is capable of providing continuous hot water even when multiple showers, tubs, sinks or appliances are in use at the same time.*

GE's tankless gas water heaters also fit in small spaces. Available in both outdoor and indoor models, the tankless gas water heater's compact footprint (approximately 23-inches height x 14-inches width x 10-inches; deep, and weighing 50 pounds) allows installation in attics, garages, closets or other out-of-the-way locations. For the ultimate in convenience, units can be equipped with an optional remote controller, which allows the user to monitor and adjust hot water temperature in the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room or any other room. Outdoor units are equipped with ceramic heaters that prevent them from freezing at temperatures as low as –30°F.

The GE tankless gas water heater is available in two sizes (7.5-gallon-per-minute flow and 9.4-gallon-per-minute flow), indoor and outdoor. The 7.5-gallon-per-minute flow is available in natural gas; the 9.4-gallon-per-minute flow is available in natural gas or LP gas.

*Size appropriately, as flow rates may diminish based on simultaneous use of multiple showers/baths and/or appliances.
** Based on testing conducted by the Department of Energy.

Color Trends Authentic and Traditional Paint Hues Refresh and Excite the Senses

Color style for 2009 draws inspiration from both nature and nurture. With increasing numbers of homeowners remaining in place, many are searching for options to refresh and reinvigorate their living spaces. By the simple change of paint color, any room is a reinvention candidate.

Debbie Zimmer from the Rohm and Haas Paint Quality Institute says, “Key drivers for 2009 color choice include aspirations to create a comfortable, tranquil home environment coupled with a return to authentic and sustainable materials. In contrast, lively color use and bold patterns will find their place as an alternative to more sedate living areas.”

Zimmer shares the 2009 paint hue directions along with potential rooms for incorporation and decorative effects reflective of each.

Menswear
“Menswear”

Like a warm argyle or paisley sweater, consumers increased yearning for artisanship, authentic materials and design motivates “Menswear”. Menswear allows for a more traditional use of hues than recently seen such as navy blue, leather-like brown and rich grey.

Texture-like finishes and decorative techniques are also important to this palette. Incorporating herringbone and argyle paint patterns provides a focal point in living and family rooms.

“Weather or Not”

Our eco-consciousness continues to expand and “Weather or Not!” glances upward for inspiration. This palette takes a cue from the continually changing skies, provides the homeowner with colors represented by sunrise or sunset resulting in a shift from the more expected botanical hues.

While suitable for all areas of the home, these combinations are an especially good choice for bathrooms, bedrooms and family living spaces.

What's in Bloom

“What's in Bloom?”

Consumers increased desire for healthy and sustainable locally grown fruits and vegetables provides bountiful inspiration for “What’s in Bloom?”. Another twist on the “green” movement, this palette is inspired by fresh hues including citrus green, mango and lemon yellow.

Not just for a one-season offering, “What’s in Bloom” also derives inspiration from fresh fall produce such as pumpkin orange and apple red.

“What’s in Bloom” is ripe for use in a child’s bedroom, playroom and kitchens. Use in closets and pantry areas to provide an unanticipated pop of color.

What's In Bloom Color Recommendations
Citrus Green, Mango, Apple Red, Lemon Yellow, Pumpkin Orange
